Cultivation of energy crops: a national research project EVA
The project "Development and comparison of optimized crops for agricultural production of energy crops under the different conditions of locations in Germany" (EVA) starts its second phase. The Federal Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection (BMELV) is developing the EVA project, started in 2005 until 2012, which will be coordinated by the project manager, l Agency of renewable raw materials (FNR) . The heart of the project is the protection and optimization of the results of the first phase, to test a system of rotation of crops in different agricultural regions in Germany.
The beginning of this second phase marks the launchby the BMELV of one of the largest projects of expansion of the cultivation of energy crops in Germany. The line of research does not only aim to reduce, with structures crops more efficient energy, the dependence on fossil fuels towards ever smaller quantities. It is also to take greater account of the aspects of nature through alternatives, not only in the range of species but also in farming methods.
4 years ago started the project coordinated by the regional facility in Thuringia in charge of agriculture TTL with the objective to develop new cropping systems and crop rotation for the production of agricultural sources of energy plant. Even then, it was clear that a concentration almost unilateral crops such as canola, corn grain and some limit the potential of the biomass sector and lead to conflicts of interests between energy production and protection the environment. The federal government's response has resulted in a development of R & D in the sector of energy crops, in which the interconnection project EVAÂ is a key.
EVA shows that the culture of various energy crops can be conducted efficiently and cleaner in combination with the production of products intended for food. They contribute, in appropriate crop rotations, increased species diversity in the agricultural landscape.
In the next 3 years, the results obtained so far will be scientifically verified and the system of culture will be further optimized. The basis for success lies in the proven structure of the proposed EVA. The participation of research organizations across the country, with agricultural skills, economic, environmental and technical guarantees an overall assessment of the culture system analyzed.
