The roots of osteoporosis

e4A group of researchers at the University of Bari has conducted a study that illuminates the mechanisms responsible for osteoporosis. The findings are published in an article in the journal Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology, Osteoporosis is characterized by skeletal fragility, due to decreased bone mass and deterioration of bone microarchitecture, which increases the risk of invoice. In 2007, the research group has prepared two samples of osteoclasts, cells plurinucle responsible for bone resorption. One of the two samples was sent into space with the FOTON-M3 mission of the European Space Agency and the other was kept on

the land. The cells of the two samples were introduced in two bioreactors which were administered nutrients at regular intervals. The first sample was 12 days in space, "microgravity" and then returned to Earth for analysis. The results showed that the absence of gravity stimulates the maturation and activity of osteoclasts.
