Less risk of heart attack in women
The Prevention and Protection of CNR of Rome, in collaboration with the Medical Service of FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization), conducted a study, "Coronary Heat Disease Prevention Program", on the prevention of major cardiovascular risk factors on people working in various multiethnic seats Rome United Nations, dealing with hunger in the world (FAO, WFP, IFAD). The research was conducted with male subjects (from 45) and female (50 years and over, but if early menopause). The project, Roberto Volpe NRC, explained that the study has allowed them to assess risk perception on the part of the subjects discussed. Indeed, each patient had toevaluate, before the examination, their own risk of cardiovascular accident within the next ten years, using a semi quantitative scale. This assessment was then faced with that calculated by the actual risk factors, using a computer program for calculating cardiovascular risk based on the Framingham Heart Study, the epidemiological study the largest and most famous in the world.
632 employees (359 men and 273 women) participated in this research and their data were presented at the Workshop Gender Perspectives International Congress of Multiple Risk Factors in Cardiovascular Diseases of Venice. This research reveals that men have an average risk of heart attack within ten years (11.1%) while women have a low risk (5.5%).
Men fairly assess their own risk, since they have slightly underestimated the calculated risk (seen in 46% of moderate - high) in relation to perceived risk (seen in 45% of moderate - high) . Against women by, had a very strong tendency to over-estimate their risk compared with that calculated. Indeed, 93% of women had a low risk, and only 7% a moderate risk (no woman has presented a high risk) while 43% of them thought having a moderate-high. Consistent with these data, women accounted for the highest percentage of membership in the second part of the program, the follow-up, dedicated to the subjects considered at risk. According to Roberto Volpe, women from different geographical and socio-cultural contexts, seem more anxious and probably more attentive to their own health.
