China continues the establishment of a forest ecology
China is facing serious environmental problems. Aware of the situation, it has implemented in recent years of key ecological projects, such as the Beijing-Tianjin for land from sand storms. Other projects have also emerged, such as converting arable land into forest and another on the protection of forest resources. The country's economy and should thus be strengthened and improved the environmental situation. The Chinese government has recently published a document, first of its kind, highlighting the importance of pursuing large-scale forestry to improve the ecological environment of the national territory.
China is undergoing a creeping desertification. More than 100 million people livein desert regions, and nearly 400 million people are affected by desertification. It has already become an important factor limiting economic development and social development. The spokesman for the National Bureau of Forestry of China, Cao Qingyao, said that the fight against desertification is an urgent matter. Mr. Cao, the total area of desert in China is 2.63 million km_ or 27.46% of the national territory, and accelerate the fight against desertification in these key areas is an urgent task, but also full of difficulties.
In some areas around Beijing, the ecological environment is fragile. There are few plantations, and the surface is often bare. In winter and spring, often sand storms seriously affect the quality of the environment of Beijing. To this end, China began in 2000, the Beijing-Tianjin project for land from sand storms. The project involves five provinces, regions and municipalities directly under central authority: Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei, Shanxi and Inner Mongolia. Since the implementation of this project through the joint efforts of the National Forests and services work, the size of areas planted with trees and tall grasses has increased? These regions have developed economically and socially sustainable, and incomes of farmers and ranchers have increased.
In Inner Mongolia, since the implementation of the project, the area of desert land has decreased by 1.6 million hectares. The land area of all of the autonomous region has already reached more than 20 million hectares, almost 20% of its total area. Meanwhile, the project has stimulated the conversion of the mode of production of agriculture and animal husbandry.
The project on the protection of natural forests, launched in 2000, has helped to effectively protect the forest resources upstream of Yangtze River, the middle and lower reaches of the Yellow River and the north-east and Inner Mongolia. This project will end in 2010. To this end, China has released a special document which confirms the increased investment in protecting natural forests. According to the spokesman of National Bureau of Forestry of China, Mr. Cao Qingyao, in the fourth quarter of 2008, the State has taken steps to increase domestic demand and stimulating economic growth, increasing investment of one billion yuan for the purpose of protecting natural forests, thus laying a good foundation for establishing a system of ecological security of the country.
